Dr. Yaritza Gomez

Veterinarian

Dr. Yaritza Gomez is the most recent Veterinarian to join Best Pet Vets and grew up in Boston.  She started college as a nursing major and shadowed different human medicine specialties. During that time, Yaritza had a fear of having to perform euthanasia on animals.  She started at the Massachusetts College of Public Health in Boston and immediately felt a void and unhappiness. In the back of her mind, becoming a veterinarian was the dream that stood out.  Fun fact, in a book she created in 4th grade the last sentence in the ‘About the Author’ page stated, “My name is Yaritza Gomez, I am 10 years old, and when I grow up, I want to become a veterinarian.”

Dr. Gomez reached out to Angell Memorial Hospital in Boston telling them her story and sought an opportunity to shadow a veterinarian.  One doctor gave her this opportunity yet she did not want to be in the exam rooms during euthanasia. But one day the veterinarian sat her down and explained what “humane euthanasia” means for owners and more importantly, for the beloved pets. She immediately changed her major after that.

Dr. Gomez graduated with honors from MCPHS and went to veterinary school at the University of Missouri.  Her original dream was to go to veterinary school on an island to “study on the beach every day”, but her family did not want me far, so that dream quickly ended! Interestingly, she was accepted to a dual Doctor of Veterinary Medicine & Master of Public Health program. It was quite the journey for her, but well worth it.  She also enjoys the concept of OneHealth and learning about zoonotic diseases.

Dr. Gomez published a paper in the Veterinary Clinical Pathology journal. In 2020 she graduated and was accepted to a rotating internship at Tufts Veterinary school for 7 months.  Yaritza then moved on to working in the general practice world where and continued to develop her skills. As a veterinarian what she loves the most is building long-term client-patient-veterinarian relationships!  She is also fascinated with heart and GI conditions.

When not working in her dream career, she enjoys hiking with her 10-year-old Border Collie mix, Tucker, traveling to different countries, watching movies, trying new restaurants, weight-lifting, and painting!  She describes herself as an adrenaline junkie, so, new adventures of any kind, is something she will never pass up!
